Liverpool’s hopes of receiving a significant boost ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League group stage draw have been dashed.

The Reds could have been elevated to Pot 2 had Greek side PAOK Salonika seen off Benfica in their play-off second leg on Wednesday evening.

However, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Lisbon, Benfica progressed after they beat the Greek side 4-1 to stroll through to Thursday’s draw in Monaco.

It means Liverpool remain in Pot 3, and will now be drawn against one of Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli, Roma or Benfica.
