Toto Wolff, the Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes, has recently denied the rumors regarding the possibility of him joining Scuderia Ferrari at the end of the 2020 Formula One season and also taking Lewis Hamilton with him in Maranello: “The Ferrari brand is great, but what Mercedes has offered me is unique. They gave me the trust to buy myself into the team as a shareholder. This is not a matter of course!” – the Mercedes chief explained, as reported today by leading German automobile magazine ‘Auto motor und sport’.
“At Mercedes I can also live my life as a businessman. This constellation has led to relationships that cannot simply be left behind.” – he added. Toto Wolff and Mercedes are calm and don’t want to rush things with Lewis Hamilton regarding his contract, amid rumors the British driver could be joining the Maranello team in the future: “Our goal is to continue with Lewis. But 25% we don’t have under control what happens. Nothing has been agreed with Lewis. Maybe we will sit down at the end of January.” – Toto Wolff added.
Lewis Hamilton neither denied nor confirmed the rumors about meeting John Elkann, the chairman of Ferrari. According to ‘Auto motor und sport’, an anonymous source confirmed that Mercedes is calm regarding the rumors and that Lewis Hamilton will stay with his current team if they give him the best car/engine in 2021, but at that same time Hamilton’s future with Mercedes could also depend on what Toto Wolff is doing.
