Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has told the club which central defender would be the best replacement for veteran player Gerard Pique at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona signed Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong as their frontpage stars in the summer from Atletico Madrid and Ajax Amsterdam respectively. However, the Catalans did not meet one huge agenda that was on their wish list since the start of the 2019 calendar year- the recruitment of a central defender.
Ernesto Valverde’s side was interested and heavily linked with Ajax Amsterdam captain Matthijs de Ligt for almost the whole year until the Netherlands international chose to move to Juventus instead. Barca have not been defensively adept and are inconsistent at the back this campaign, making a defender’s signing imperative in January or the next summer.
Samuel Umtiti is likely to leave the Camp Nou in January to play regularly at a club so as to get back into Didier Deschamps’ contention for France’s Euro 2020 squad and Gerard Pique is slowly leaving his best behind him. Hence, Lionel Messi has told the Blaugrana to sign Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof, according to Diario GOL.
Manchester United are flirting with relegation and stand a chance of finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, so an ambitious and quality player like Victor Lindelof will certainly be ready to leave the Old Trafford to pursue trophies. Lindelof is a regular alongside Harry Maguire at the centre of defence, but he is not as bad as United’s results.
Victor Lindelof was linked with the defending La Liga champions during the summer and his agent also confirmed that there were talks with Barca. However, the Red Devils’ chief Ed Woodward barred the Sweden international’s exit. Should United continue their negative springing, Woodward may not be in a position to stop Lindelof on the next instance.
Would Victor Lindelof be Pique’s rightful successor in spite of his aerial weaknesses?
